This image by Caspar David Friedrich is called Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog and is often used to help explain the way the Romantics saw themselves and the world.  Wikipedia explains that the Romanticism, which reached its peak in the mid-1800s, was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism as well as glorification of all the past and nature, preferring the medieval rather than the classical.
